Join Ohio’s Computer Science 2020-2021 professional development

Computing is a fundamental part of today’s world, but most Ohio students don’t have an opportunity to learn this critical skill. You can make a difference by learning how to teach Computer Science to your students!

Applications are open now for a new cohort of Ohio teachers to join’s Computer Science Professional Learning Program.’s Professional Learning Program is an intensive, year-long learning experience for middle and high school educators interested in teaching’s Computer Science Discoveries (middle school) or Computer Science Principles (high school) courses.

Participants will explore Computer Science curriculum and tools, experiment with specific teaching strategies, and join a local community of teachers using this curriculum.

Teachers who apply and are accepted must:

  • Attend the five-day, in-person virtual summer workshop July 6-10, 2019, in Columbus, Ohio
  • Attend four local one-day, in-person workshops (on Saturdays throughout the school year). These may be moved to virtual as we get closer to these dates depending upon the current health crisis.
  • Teach the course during the 2020-21 school year
  • Support the recruitment and enrollment of a diverse group of students in the course, representative of the school’s overall student population

Cost and Scholarships

For Ohio teachers, the cost of the Computer Science Discoveries and Computer Science Principles program starts at $1,150 per teacher plus a $150.00 enrollment fee. Scholarships are available based on need.

The program fee covers the full year-long program including teaching resources, workshop supplies, nine days of professional development, and your meals (breakfast & lunch) during face-to-face workshops. This is a cost of $144 per day. Additional travel costs are not covered.

The curriculum, online student learning platform, and year-round support are available to all schools at no charge.

Apply for a scholarship! Do you teach in a high needs school, or a school with a diverse student population? Is funding for computer science limited in your district? We have full and partial scholarships available for teachers in Ohio. Scholarship eligibility will be based on information provided during the application process. As of May 11, 2020, we currently have eight additional scholarships available to give out.

Full scholarships* are available to schools which meet one of the following conditions:

  • Socio- Economic Status​
    • Free/reduced meal rate is ≥ 50% OR
    • Rural regions + Free/reduced meal rate is ≥ 40% OR
  • Underrepresented minority rate is ≥ 50%

Partial scholarships* may be available to schools who do not meet these requirements but require financial assistance to participate.

*Schools who receive the scholarship must still pay the $150.00 enrollment fee. However, the enrollment fee is provided as a stipend to the teacher participant at the end of the year providing the teacher attends 8 of the 9 workshop days.The priority application deadline was April 30, 2020. However, but the application will remain open until we give out last scholarship or until June 6, 2020. Applications and scholarships will be reviewed and awarded on a rolling basis.
