Empowering All Students for Success is not only the mission of the entire district, but it is the daily driving force that makes WTES strive for excellence. Along with our district mission, we incorporate our core values of Honoring Connections, Honoring Curiosity, and Honoring Commitments into all aspects of our academics and school culture. When we honor connections, we mean that academics, people, and our school culture come together in meaningful ways that personalize instruction and activities to meet the needs of every student. When we honor curiosity, we empower students to have inquisitive minds that strongly desire to know and learn.

We believe it is okay to not know something, because the value of learning lies in the productive struggle. When we honor commitments, we embrace and practice the habit to do what needs to be done. In order to be effective citizens, in collaborative roles (listening first), we must assume positive intent in our conversations.

WTES has been working for more than four years to incorporate design thinking into the elementary school by increasing teacher capacity to provide innovative instruction for all students. This also coincided with the the district’s 2014 Straight A Innovation Grant award which created the foundation for innovation in grades K-5.

Through our Straight A Grant effort, we developed a Core Innovation Team to initiate instructional change, created our district’s first Innovative Maker Space, introduced all staff to Project Based Learning (PBL) through Buck Institute for Education (BIE), and began to integrate design thinking across the curriculum. We built systems to support military families which resulted in our school being honored by the Ohio Department of Education with a 2018 Purple Star Award for military –friendly schools. We continue to strive to meet the needs of our students with the assistance of partnerships and curriculum as well as an emphasis on the role of science, technology, math and engineering.
