The mission of McKinley STEM Academy, a K-8 elementary school in Toledo Public Schools (TPS) District, is to provide innovative experiences in STEM to cultivate life-long learning and to help students become critical problem solvers in the 21st century. McKinley has a strong focus on Project Based Learning and STEM. The leadership and staff at McKinley STEMM Academy recognizes that all students learn differently. To optimize learning and narrow the achievement gap, the STEMM project-based curriculum allows for differentiation while meeting the visual, auditory and/or kinesthetic learning styles of all students, along with creating a classroom environment that is both nurturing and stimulating. In order to do this, McKinley STEM implements a collaborative instructional model which serves as a training site and showcase for STEM in an urban-based neighborhood school environment. Engineering practices are taught following a school-wide Engineering Design Process adopted by the staff and utilized within PBL. Students use the engineering design process when creating products that solve real world problems or make life easier for ourselves or the community. All students participate in engineering challenges and projects that reflect the Ohio Learning Standards across content areas.
