SUMMARY:Ag Biotech Academy workshop (2-day event)
DESCRIPTION:Ag Biotech Academy introduces teachers to the ways biotech is incorporated into agriculture using biotech skills in food science activities and biofuels labs. For teachers of biology\, chemistry and environmental science. (OHIO teachers only) \nAt this two-day workshop all participants will experience:\n– Industry speakers addressing current trends in the use of biotechnology in agriculture\n– Biotech lab skills (basic micropipetting\, septic technique\, calculating and making dilutions\, pouring agar plates)\n– Introduction to gel electrophoresis\n– Soil dilution and bacterial growth\n– Gram staining of bacteria\n– Genetic modification detection in food through the use of PCR and gel electrophoresis\n– Biofuels labs (making and testing biodiesel) \nA virtual industry tour will be included in the workshop. \nAt the industry dinner held the first night of the workshop\, participants will have the opportunity to talk with experts such as field agronomists\, soybean researchers\, those in the fields of agribusiness & communications\, ag production\, and others. Attendees are expected to attend this dinner. \nEach teacher will receive over $300 worth of classroom lab supplies. 18 hours of contact time will be awarded for the 2 day workshop and 1 hour of graduate credit from Ashland University is available for $180. \nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:How is science contributing to the future of global food and energy security? Learn how advancing technologies help us produce more with less. Each teacher will receive over $250 worth of classroom lab supplies. You’ll also take part in inquiry-based\, hands-on science labs with an engineering design focus covering these topics:\n– Biotechnology\n– Soil science\n– Water quality\n– Energy production\n– Sustainable agricultural practices \nThese lessons address Ohio Science Standards in middle school and high school. \nMeet industry experts and take an industry tour. Enjoy an evening dinner where you’ll meet and talk with local farmers and industry experts and see technology demonstrations.\nHotel and meals provided by Ohio Corn & Wheat. The hotel accommodations that are being provided are single rooms in an effort to provide the safest environment for you. 16 hours of contact time will be awarded for the 2 day workshop\, and 1 hour of graduate credit is available from Ashland University for $185. \nPLEASE NOTE: This workshop is geared toward middle and high school teachers. The content covered is above the level of elementary grades science.

DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about renewable fuel? Take part in our renewable energy workshop at Global Impact STEM Academy. \nParticipants will explore how the Ag industry is creating quality feed and fuel while helping the environment. \nThese lessons address Ohio Science Standards in 7th and 8th-grade science\, Biology\, Chemistry\, and Environmental Science. \n\nHow is ethanol creating quality feed and fuel for Ohio and around the world?\nWhy is renewable ethanol important to our lives and the future?\nHow can an ethanol coproduct\, corn oil\, be used to produce renewable fuel?\nHow can agricultural careers impact our students’ pathways?\n\nNetwork with industry and fellow educators\, practice a variety of labs focused on renewable fuels\, and connect agriculture to your classroom. \nEach participant will receive kit materials to perform the corn fermentation\, corn mash\, and distillation labs in the classroom! \nAll expenses paid\, including materials and food.
