SUMMARY:STEM Deep Dive Professional Development Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Ohio STEM Learning Network\, together with the Northwest Ohio Center for Excellence in STEM Education at Bowling Green State University\, invites educators\, school administrators and/or staff to participate in a daylong workshop to gain a deeper understanding of the three domains of STEM education by exploring the STEM Quality Model of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.* \nThis session will provide an overview of how culture\, curriculum\, and connections to the community work together to support STEM best practices for a school-wide approach and will guide participants to understand how STEM education transcends content areas\, resulting in a shift in the way students engage in learning from kindergarten to graduation. Facilitators will present what distinguishes a STEM school from other schools with strategies to support all students and will assist schools interested in seeking STEM or STEAM designation. \nRegistration\nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdIMZnl4WYJcEwdroxfIpp42bkIsn9xFri562hDWY57zhSAuQ/viewform \nRegistration is now closed. Please complete the form above to be added to the waiting list. \nUpdated Quality Model\nThe Quality Model for STEM and STEAM Schools was developed to provide clarity and examples of high-quality STEM and STEAM school practices as follows: \nDomain One: CULTURE for Learning\nCreating a culture of innovation to support STEM best practices \nShifting a school and community culture towards a STEM mindset is a team effort. Learn tangible ways on how to shift a school and community culture to include innovation\, entrepreneurship\, inquiry and collaboration. Topics include building a school-wide design cycle and supporting teacher innovation in the classroom\, while engaging parents and guardians in the process. \n  \nDomain Two: LEARNING AND TEACHING\nSTEM Curriculum: What does teaching and learning look like in a STEM school? \nSTEM and Project/Problem Based Learning (PBL) go hand-in-hand\, but what does it mean to implement PBL and more? Facilitators will demonstrate how PBL is used as a launching pad to personalize student learning. \n  \nDomain Three: PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS IN STEM CAREERS\nBuilding community partnerships to provide real-world context \nHow can partnerships deepen the education experience for students and the community? Participants will learn the role of partnerships in STEM from the Quality Model and explore the nature of partnerships\, and how community partnerships positively impact learning for all students. \n  \nDetails\nThis professional development session is sponsored by the Ohio STEM Learning Network and the Northwest Ohio Center for Excellence in STEM Education (NWO) at Bowling Green State University. NWO is one of the seven hubs of the Ohio STEM Learning Network\, which aims to champion and advance STEM initiatives and education throughout the region and state. The session is offered free of charge and will take place on: Thursday\, April 17th at BGSU Levis Commons\,1655 N. Wilkinson Way\, Perrysburg\, OH 43551\, beginning at 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with lunch provided. Please arrive between 8:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. for sign-in. \n  \nPlease contact Susan Stearns at: stearns@bgsu.edu with any questions. \n*Ohio law provides a specific pathway for schools to seek and receive designation as a STEM or STEAM school. Designation recognizes a school as an effective place for STEM or STEAM learning. Schools apply for designation from the Ohio STEM Committee\, a committee of state and community leaders. The Ohio STEM Learning Network and Ohio Department of Education and Workforce support the designation process. \nOSLN is a partner of NWO
