SUMMARY:Ag Biotech Academy workshop (2-day event)
DESCRIPTION:Ag Biotech Academy introduces teachers to the ways biotech is incorporated into agriculture using biotech skills in food science activities and biofuels labs. For teachers of biology\, chemistry and environmental science. (OHIO teachers only) \nAt this two-day workshop all participants will experience:\n– Industry speakers addressing current trends in the use of biotechnology in agriculture\n– Biotech lab skills (basic micropipetting\, septic technique\, calculating and making dilutions\, pouring agar plates)\n– Introduction to gel electrophoresis\n– Soil dilution and bacterial growth\n– Gram staining of bacteria\n– Genetic modification detection in food through the use of PCR and gel electrophoresis\n– Biofuels labs (making and testing biodiesel) \nA virtual industry tour will be included in the workshop. \nAt the industry dinner held the first night of the workshop\, participants will have the opportunity to talk with experts such as field agronomists\, soybean researchers\, those in the fields of agribusiness & communications\, ag production\, and others. Attendees are expected to attend this dinner. \nEach teacher will receive over $300 worth of classroom lab supplies. 18 hours of contact time will be awarded for the 2 day workshop and 1 hour of graduate credit from Ashland University is available for $180. \nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will determine the protein content of various foods and use a diagnostic test (ELISA) to detect the presence of a pathogen in soil. Join us for these two great labs and a field trip to 3Bar Biologics\, a microbe delivery and manufacturing company that partners with microbe discovery and commercialization companies. \nThis workshop is sponsored by GrowNextGen and BioOhio with support from BioRad. \nParticipants will receive 0.7 CEUs (7 contact hours). After completing the workshop\, participants will receive two BioRad kits: Immuno Explorer and Global Health. This workshop is for Ohio teachers only.
