Dr. Carin Helfer from the University of Akron is coordinating a major conference to be held in Akron March 8-10.
The conference is expected to draw K-12 teachers and academics from across the nation, as well as leaders from industry, foundations and federal agencies. Through workshops and speakers, attendees will explore why participation lags among underrepresented racial, ethnic and socioeconomic students and how to make science more enticing and relevant to them.
The conference activities will help inform the design and implementation of a new NSF initiative intended to increase participation nationwide in the sciences by underserved populations. The initiative is called NSF INCLUDES or “Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science.
