Engineer It: Design a Device is a new, innovative after school program offered by PAST Innovation Lab and Edheads. Open to 6th – 8th grade students, this program tasks students with researching, designing, and delivering an assistive device appropriate for our senior citizen population. This device could be any technology or gadget that helps someone perform a task that he or she could not complete without assistance.

Students will explore real-world problems faced by engineers in designing these devices. Elements of the program include:

  • Gathering their own research to determine a desired assistive device to create
  • Conducting an interview of a senior citizen in their community
  • Building a new assistive device or modifying an existing one
  • Presenting their solution through a Presentation of Learning conducted on the final day to an authentic public audience

This program will be a three-part, six-hour program and is limited to the first 20 students that sign up. The cost is $55 per student. This includes all hands on supplies and materials for the class. Students will be responsible for bringing their own laptop computer to the program in order to access the Internet.
