Spring 2020 opportunities

  • Computer science professional development: Applications are now open for Code.org’s computer science professional development program. Battelle’s Ohio STEM Learning Network is partnering with Code.org, a nonprofit computer science curriculum provider, to support educators interested in bringing computer science to their schools. Code.org’s Professional Learning Program is an intensive, year-long learning experience for middle and high school educators interested in teaching Code.org’s Computer Science Discoveries (middle school) or Computer Science Principles (high school) courses. Learn more here about this valuable opportunity or nominate other educators for the experience. Applications and scholarships are reviewed on a rolling basis, a few seats remain.
  • Re-Start Re-Design Lab: The start of the 2020-2021 school year will definitely look different because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. EnvisionEdPlus, in partnership with the Ohio STEM Learning Network, and in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education, offers FREE Re-Start Re-Design Labs to assist schools and districts in planning for Fall 2020.

What is STEM education?

STEM is much more than the four subject areas that form it’s acronym. STEM is a unique approach to teaching and learning that fosters creativity and innovative thinking in all students.

STEM education is a direct response to the realization that other states and nations are gaining competitive advantage by asserting their scientific and technological leadership, and that Ohio’s future will be built on its own capacity for innovation, invention and creative problem solving. STEM education produces exactly the kind of thinkers, innovators and problem solvers such a world demands.

Regional STEM Training Centers

To meet the growing demand for STEM professional development, we equipped and developed eight regional STEM training centers across the state. Each training center is designed to highlight the strengths of the STEM platform schools in that region and provide a vehicle to spread STEM effective practices across Ohio.

Example training topics include problem- and project-based learning, intersessions, ASSISTments, FAB LAB, student-led conferences, STEM school design and development, technology integration, mastery and college ready tools.
