Join us for Computer Science Advocacy Day at the Statehouse

Computer Science opens more doors than any other discipline. Learning the basics will help students in every career—from agriculture to healthcare. Seventy-one percent (71%) of all U.S. jobs require digital skills. High-skilled computing occupations are the fastest-growing, best-paying, and largest sector of all new wages in the U.S.

This holds true in our home state. According to the Computing Technology Industry Association, Ohio is ranked 10th in the country in both net tech employment and net tech employment job gains.1 Yet many schools do not teach Computer Science.
The Ohio STEM Learning Network is partnering with Project Lead the Way, TechCorps, Cleveland State University, Code.org and other organizations to highlight the importance of Computer Science education by hosting a Computer Science Advocacy day at the Ohio Statehouse on December 10, 2019.

This year’s advocacy day will help shine a light on the importance of Computer Science and prepare the way for further advocacy work. Students from across the state will encourage lawmakers to join them and do Computer Science. Students will share examples of how they use Computer Science to help solve problems that matter and how taking a Computer Science class has changed their perceptions of the subject. The student showcase will take place from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the Statehouse Atrium.

We are excited to provide a platform for students and teachers to speak directly to policy makers. During the advocacy day, students will meet with legislators to share their personal experiences with Computer Science and advocate for policies that support schools in bringing foundational Computer Science education to all Ohio students.

If you are an educator and can bring your students to advocate for Computer Science, please complete the form below. Please note, you will need to know your district numbers in the Ohio House and Ohio Senate. Find them using this tool.
